MOKRA GORA - DRVENIK

The ethnic village Drvengrad, or "Timber town" is located in the beautiful nature park Mokra Gora, between two mountains; Tara and Zlatibor, on Mećavnik hill. Built according to a Serbian film director Emir Kusturica's idea for his film Life Is a Miracle, this small place was declared the best architectural achievement in Europe in 2005.

As its name suggests, everything in Drvengrad is made of timber. Special attention was paid to the wooden houses or log cabins, which testify to the life and history of this area because of their authenticity. This small village has a city gate, 13 streets and 2 squares, as well as a cinema, a church, local market, sports fields and many restaurants. Streets paved with wooden blocks bear the names of famous cultural figures and scientists. The whole experience is complemented by wooden birds that adorn the village at every turn.

Drvengrad is also known as "Kustendorf", just like the eponymous international festival held in the village every winter. This festival is a meeting place for many filmmakers, film production students, as well as world-famous actors and directors.

While walking along the main street of this village, named after the Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, don't miss the "Kafana kod Ćorkana" which was named after a character from Andrić's novel "The Bridge on the Drina", where you can try the William pear or plum rakija. The usual carbonated drinks or sodas are nowhere to be found in Drvengrad; all juices are homemade, just like cheese, yoghurt and jams. Restaurants offer quality wines, as well as many Serbian traditional dishes, which are definitely worth trying! Homemade ajvar, roasted peppers with garlic and slow-baked veal with kajmak are just some of the delicacies you can try here.

Complete your trip by riding the old train with a steam locomotive, all part of the narrow-gauge 12 km long railway, located on Mokra Gora. This adventure will take you through rocky straits where the railway makes an unusual route in the shape of number 8, taking you back to some past times through the surrounding villages.

Nature Park Mokra Gora also has trails for hiking, running and cycling, while the Iver peak, 8 km away from Drvengrad, has a wonderful ski slope, perfect for the winter months.

Embark on an adventure with your Carwiz vehicle and enjoy this magical ethnic village and the natural beauty of Serbia.
